Important Canadian Tax Deadlines and Dates

Updated: Jan 12

An opened calendar

Canadian residents, both individuals and corporations, must file an income tax return annually. The initial step involves understanding the specific deadlines for filing these returns and settling tax obligations, as these dates vary slightly from year to year. The following section outlines key dates pertaining to various categories of tax filings.

Personal Income Tax

For most Canadians, the deadline to both file and pay 2024 taxes is April 30, 2025. However, if you, your spouse, or common-law partner are self-employed, the filing deadline extends to June 16, 2025.

Tax Instalments: Planning for Next Year's Taxes

If your net tax owing for 2024 exceeds $3,000 (for Quebec residents, $1,800), you may need to make tax instalments for the upcoming year. The due dates for these instalments in 2025 are as follows:

  • March 15

  • June 15

  • September 15

  • December 15

RRSP Contributions: Maximizing Your Deductions

Ensure your RRSP contributions for the 2024 tax year are made by the deadline of February 28, 2025. Contributions made after this date will require you to claim deductions on your 2024 tax return. Plan ahead to maximize your benefits.

Corporate Income Tax

Filing Dates for Corporate Taxes

Corporate tax returns must be filed within six months after the end of each tax year. See the examples below:

  • If your corporation’s tax year ends May 31, your filing is due November 30

  • If your corporation’s tax year ends July 15, your filing is due January 15

When the filing deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday recognized by the CRA, the tax return will be considered filed on time if it is sent on the first business day after the filing deadline.

Payment Date for Corporate Taxes

The payments of taxes owing are due earlier than the filing due date. Generally, the taxes owed are due 2 months after the tax year-end.

However, the taxes owing is due 3 months after the tax year-end if the following conditions are met:

  • The corporation is a Canadian-controlled private corporation (CCPC)

  • The corporation claimed the small business deduction for the current or previous year

  • The corporation and all associated corporations had less than $500,000 in taxable income

The filing deadline will be different depending on your GST/HST filing frequency.
